Laura Cortese is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, singer, fiddler, and all-around ultra-talented artist. We have such an awesome conversation about where her music comes from. Her music threads together darkness and light, stillness and motion, joy and sorrow. It’s beautiful.
I also had the good fortune of working briefly with Laura and her partner, Kristin Andreassen (who I hope to also get on the show someday) with their Miles of Music program. It’s basically a grown-up summer camp for adults who want to live and breathe music for a week. Having attended, I can say first-hand that it was one of the most joyous weeks of my life, and it reflects what makes Laura so special: her capacity to bring people together and have them make something greater than they ever could on their own.
What's more, Laura's newly born baby joins us on this interview. It was my first interview with a fellow working parent who’s juggling the complexity of both showing up for her art and her career and also showing up for her loved ones amidst the pandemic. This conversation is a masterclass in how to do that well. And don’t forget: stick around to the end to hear one of Laura’s songs in its entirety. You won't regret it.
